El Dorado Hills, CA – Saddle up for an exciting summer adventure! The fourth annual We Read Horse Books Summer Reading Program launches on June 1, 2025, inviting children of all ages to explore the magic of reading through the world of horses. Supported by over 40 horse book authors from around the globe, this free virtual program offers an inspiring and fun-filled way to keep kids engaged in reading all summer long.

With a curated library of more than 200 horse-themed books categorized by age and reading level, from charming picture books and early readers to middle grade and young adult novels, the program has something for every young equestrian at heart. There’s even a collection of nonfiction and STEM-focused titles for curious minds who love learning as much as they love horses.

How It Works:

1. Register your child at www.wereadhorsebooks.com.

2. Download the Summer Reading Trail Map.

3. Read and complete fun book-related activities over the summer.

4. Upload the completed map by September 1, 2025, to enter a random drawing to win free books from participating authors!

“Kids are more likely to read if they can find a book on subjects they love,” says Rae Rankin, founder of We Read Horse Books. “We wanted to create a program and a place where horse-loving kids could find the books they want to read.

Summer learning loss is real, but it’s preventable. Studies consistently show that children who participate in summer reading programs improve their reading skills, motivation, and confidence, setting them up for success in the new school year.

“Programs like ours support vocabulary development, comprehension, and critical thinking, all vital for academic achievement,” Rankin says.

Founded in 2022 by author Rae Rankin, We Read Horse Books began with a small group of 20 authors determined to inspire a new generation of readers. With the support of program administrators Laura Holt-Haslam and Christine Meunier, the program has since grown into a global initiative with more than 40 participating authors and a mission to connect horse-loving kids with their next favorite book.
