Hey everyone, and welcome to the best time of the year: SUMMER!
Get ready for some serious summer lovin’ with your favorite four-legged friend. After surviving the chill of winter and prepping everything during spring, it’s finally time for the ground to be perfect, the sun to shine bright, and the show season to kick into high gear. It’s hands down one of my absolute favorite times of the year!
Chill Out
As the temperatures start to climb, it’s super important to make sure our pony pals have access to cool, clean water and some shade from that scorching sun.
Hydration is key. Keep a close watch on those water buckets and field troughs because when it gets hotter, algae can sneak up on you fast—gotta get rid of that green stuff, pronto!
And if you’re lucky enough, hitting the beach for a ride is the ultimate way to keep your horse cool and active. It’s Joey’s absolute favorite spot to trot around!

Stay Shady
When the sun’s blazing, make sure your horse has options to chill in the shade. Whether it’s a cozy field shelter, a shady spot under some trees, or maybe even stalling your buddy during the hottest part of the day, you gotta keep him cool and comfy.
Screen Protector
Got a horse with some pink skin? You’ve got to protect those tender areas from getting sunburned. Treat them like the babies they are and slather on some baby waterproof sunscreen. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver.
Keep off the Grass
Now, listen up—especially if you’ve got fields of lush, green grass. It might be tempting to let your horses graze 24/7, but be careful. Those new grass shoots can pack some serious sugar, not good for us or our equine buddies.
Certain tough breeds like Welsh Ponies, Shetlands, and Connemaras can be real sugar fiends and pack on the pounds quickly, not to mention they are at higher risk of laminitis. Keep an eye out for those signs.
Popsicle Party
Who doesn’t love a good frozen treat in the summer? Whip up some DIY popsicles for your horse using an old ice cream carton and his favorite treats, like apples or carrots. Fill it with water and freeze it overnight. There you go, tasty and refreshing treats for your furry pals!
Mani-Pedi
Dry weather can wreak havoc on our horses’ hooves. Keep them looking strong and fabulous all summer long with a daily dose of hoof oil or ointment, guaranteed to keep those hooves happy. (Sorry, no guarantees it’ll work on humans, though!)
Fun Times Ahead
Summer is all about hanging with your buddies, hitting the trails, and showing off your skills in the ring. Soak up those long days, have a blast, and take care of your four-legged BFF. He’ll love it just as much as you do!
