This Esme’s List of Equestrian Things to Do in Fall

Hi everyone! Fall is almost here, and it’s one of my favorite times of year. So here are my top things to do as an equestrian in the fall.

1. Hit the Trails

There’s nothing like a scenic trail ride through fall foliage. The cool weather is perfect for exploring new paths, and the change of scenery is great for both you and your horse. Trail riding helps build trust and gives your horse a mental break from arena work. Plus, studies show that spending time in nature reduces stress—so it’s a win-win!

2. Dress Up for Halloween

Who says humans get to have all the Halloween fun? Get creative and dress up your pony or horse in a matching costume! Whether it’s a unicorn, superhero, or a character from a movie, you can enter a local costume class or just snap adorable photos. Just make sure the costume is safe and comfortable for your pony—I always use “horse-safe” paints!

3. Make Pumpkin Horse Treats

Pumpkin isn’t just for lattes—it’s a healthy snack for ponies, too! Try baking homemade pumpkin oatmeal cookies (just mix oats, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, and water, then bake). Your pony will love the seasonal treat, and it’s a fun way to bond.

4. Have a Fall Photo Shoot

The golden leaves and soft autumn light make for stunning photos. Grab a friend (or a tripod) and take some gorgeous shots with your pony. Use props like pumpkins, hay bales, or even a cozy plaid blanket. These pictures will be keepsakes forever!

5. Try No-Stirrup November

Challenge yourself to improve your balance and strength by riding without stirrups. Start with short sessions at the walk and trot, and soon you’ll feel more secure in the saddle. Bonus: Your legs will be stronger for next show season!

6. Go on a Beach Ride (If You Can!)

If you live near a horse-friendly beach, fall is a great time to ride along the shore. The crowds are smaller, and the cool breeze makes for an unforgettable gallop. The sand is like a huge arena and can be a good option if the trails are getting too wet. Just check local rules first—some beaches allow horses only after summer ends.

7. Host a Barn Party

Gather your horse-loving friends for a pumpkin-carving party or a “Friendsgiving” potluck at the barn. Play games, share horse stories, and enjoy time together. You could even set up a mini obstacle course for the ponies!

8. Do a Fall Health Check

Before winter arrives, make sure your pony is in top shape. Schedule a vet visit for vaccines, dental checks, and hoof care. Also, inspect blankets for rips and wash them if needed so your pony stays cozy when it gets chilly.

9. Set Riding Goals for Next Year

Reflect on your progress and dream big. Maybe you want to master canter transitions, try a new discipline, or even compete at a higher level. Write down your goals and make a plan—winter training will be more fun with a clear focus.

10. Enjoy Every Moment!

Fall is a magical time for horse lovers—so grab your helmet, saddle up, and make memories with your pony. Whether you’re racing through leaves or just grooming under a cozy sunset, these moments are what make horse life so special.
