With the summer show season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to mix up your riding routine and have some fun. And what better way to do that than riding on the beach?
Just imagine it: endless stretches of soft sand, the sound of waves crashing, and the salty breeze in your hair. It’s like having the biggest riding arena in the world, and trust me, your horse will love it just as much as you do.

Planning for a Ride at the Beach
I’m super lucky to have an amazing beach not too far from home, but riding on the beach does take a little planning. First things first—always check the tides! You don’t want to arrive only to find no sand to ride on because the tide is all the way in. Been there, done that, learned my lesson.
And of course, make sure that horses are allowed on the beach you plan to visit. Some beaches have specific rules or time restrictions, so check ahead to see which horse-friendly options are closest to you.
Riding the Waves
When I first took my horse Joey to the beach, he was not a fan of the water. He loved trotting and cantering on the sand, but when it came to stepping into the waves? No way.
Then one day, we happened to be riding with another horse who walked straight into the water like it was no big deal. Seeing his friend splashing around gave Joey the confidence to try it, and guess what? He loved it. Now he can’t get enough of stomping through the waves, and it’s amazing conditioning for his muscles. Plus, it’s way cheaper than a water treadmill!
Post-Ride Care
After all that splashing and sandy fun, it will be bath time. Salt and sand can irritate your horse’s skin, so I always give Joey a good rinse when we get home. But it’s not just your horse that needs a clean-up—your tack does, too. Salt water can dry out and damage leather and rust the metal fittings, so I always wipe down my saddle and bridle, give them a good clean, and finish with some leather balm or oil.
Whether you’re hitting the show ring, heading out on the trails, or galloping along the shore, the most important thing this summer is to have fun with your horse. So grab your riding boots, find an adventure, and make some unforgettable memories!
